The Minneapolis City Council has voted unanimously to rename a local street after George Floyd.
"The name is intended to honor George Perry Floyd Jr., who was killed on May 25, 2020," Minneapolis Public Works Director Robin Hutcheson said.
Immediately after his death, local residents covered the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue with flowers, candles, cards and paintings. It was at that intersection where Floyd took his final breaths as former police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee against his neck for more than eight minutes.
"The commemorative name addition will not affect addressing on the street. The signage to indicate the commemorative street naming will be placed at the intersection of 38th St E and Chicago Ave only," Hutcheson added.
Floyd has been honored by his local Minneapolis community in a number of ways. The Minnesota Vikings remembered Floyd by wearing jerseys with his name draped across the back. The University of Minnesota also launched the George Floyd Memorial Scholarship in Law back in June.
“Mr. Floyd’s killing was a tragic reminder of the inequity and injustice facing Black Americans today, despite the decades that have passed since the civil rights movement,” University of Minnesota graduates Catlan M. McCurdy and Sanjiv P. Laud stated.
Nationally, Floyd's death has helped sparked the resurgence and international growth of the Black Lives Matter movement. Along with the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and many others, Floyd's death ignited a nationwide discussion about race and become a talking point in the upcoming election cycle.
Floyd was laid to rest on May 25, 2020 in Pearland, Texas. He was 46-years-old.
