A Christian crowdfunding website raised over $500,000 for Kyle Rittenhouse's legal defense, the 17-year-old who was charged in two fatal shootings during Kenosha, Wisconsin protests.
Set up on GiveSendGo, which labelled itself the "No.1 Christian fundraising site," the fundraiser was created by a group called "Friends of the Rittenhouse Family."
"Let's give back to someone who bravely tried to defend his community," according to a description on the fundraiser's page.
An update on September 23 said they reached their goal of $500,000. As of September 30, $528,931 has been raised for Rittenhouse.
"Kyle is being unfairly charged with murder 1, by a DA who seems determined only to capitalize on the political angle of the situation. The situation was clearly self-defense, and Kyle and his family will undoubtedly need money to pay for the legal fees," the fundraiser description said.
Donors also expressed their support of Rittenhouse through comments.
"Defend yourself from those that denied you the right to defend yourself. Stand strong," an anonymous donor said.
One donor said they were "Praying for Kyle," and another called him a "21st Century American hero."
Rittenhouse is facing charges in two shooting deaths during protests in Kenosha. Demonstrators gathered in the city to condemn the police shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake.
Kenosha County prosecutors filed multiple charges against the Illinois teenager, including first-degree reckless homicide, two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, attempted first-degree intentional homicide, and possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18.
