U.S. Senate candidate Jaime Harrison is here to let voters know that COVID-19 is to be taken seriously. Over the weekend, Harrison participated in a debate with Sen. Lindsay Graham and he brought his own plexiglass shield to protect those around him.
“Tonight I am taking this seriously,” Harrison said.
“That’s why I put this plexiglass up. Because it’s not just about me, it’s about the people in my life that I have to take care of as well: my two boys, my wife, my grandmother.”
Harrison's plexiglass shield served as a constant reminder of the recent coronavirus outbreak on Capitol Hill. Last week, Senators Thom Tillis, Mike Lee and Ron Johnson tested positive for the virus. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump also tested positive for the virus. The recent outbreak has halted legislative work in the senate until October 19.
Coronavirus has become a hot button issue within the South Carolina race as Harrison and Graham compete in the hotly contested political bout. Recent polls from FiveThirtyEight have Harrison inching ahead of the incumbent and project a huge win for the Democratic party next month. In addition, Harrison has surpassed Graham on the fundraising front as well.

“What is it about South Carolina that has attracted almost $100 million into Mr. Harrison's coffers? They hate me. This is not about Mr. Harrison. This is about liberals hating my guts because I stood up for Kavanaugh when they tried to destroy his life. This is about me helping Donald Trump. The only good Republican is one that tries to undercut Trump...This election is about taking me out.”
With the the pre-election debate wrapped up, all roads lead to November 3 when Harrison will look to become just the second Black senator from South Carolina since Reconstruction.
