Senator Kamala Harris and Vice President Mike Pence will be separated by plexiglass during Wednesday's Vice Presidential Debate in Salt Lake City, Utah. Plexiglass is just one of the two new health and safety measures being implemented at Wednesday's verbal sparring session. The two politicians will be 13 feet apart instead of the seven foot distance that separated President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden during their debate.
The Biden campaign supported both of the new health and safety measures, but the Pence campaign was opposed to the plexiglass implementation.
“If Sen. Harris wants to use a fortress around herself, have at it,” Mike Pence spokeswoman Katie Miller stated.
Harris and Pence will not be the first two major party candidates to utilize a plexiglass shield during a debate. Last week, South Carolina Senate Candidate Jaime Harrison brought his own plexiglass shield to a debate with Sen. Lindsay Graham.
“Tonight I am taking this seriously...That’s why I put this plexiglass up. Because it’s not just about me, it’s about the people in my life that I have to take care of as well: my two boys, my wife, my grandmother," Harrison said.
Both of the new healthy and safety measures for Wednesday's debate were supported by the Cleveland Health Clinic. Cleveland, Ohio was the site of the first Presidential Debate between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden. Since the debate, Trump aide Hope Hicks, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for COVID-19. Senators Thom Tillis, Mike Lee and Ron Johnson have tested positive for the virus as well. Most recently, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany revealed that she too had contracted the virus.
Despite the recent Capitol Hill COVID-19 outbreak, Sen. Kamala Harris, Vice President Mike Pence and former Vice President Joe Biden have all tested negative for the virus. Their negative tests have made way for the Vice Presidential Debate on Wednesday. However, there is no word as to if the second Presidential Debate will take place in Miami as scheduled.
