Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged in the killing of George Floyd, was released on a $1 million dollar bond on Wednesday (October 7).
Chauvin was released on a conditional release from maximum security Oak Park Heights prison in Minnesota, where he had been held since May 31, Fox 9 Minneapolis reported. He is expected to appear in court in March 2021, according to NBC News.
The former officer, who is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and manslaughter, was filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck for about eight minutes during an arrest on May 25. He as well as three other former officers — Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao — were fired and charged in Floyd’s death, which sparked national protests over racial injustice.
The three other officers — Lane, Thao and Kueng — were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.
