Facebook has announced that it plans to ban all pages, accounts and groups associated with QAnon.
“Starting today, we will remove Facebook Pages, Groups and Instagram accounts representing QAnon,” the company stated.
“We’re starting to enforce this updated policy today and are removing content accordingly, but this work will take time and will continue in the coming days and weeks.”
In August, Facebook announced that it would take efforts to disrupt militarized groups on its various platforms. Ultimately, the company was able to remove approximately 1,500 pages and groups from its platform. Despite their efforts, they were unable to remove individual accounts.
QAnon is classified as a domestic threat by the F.B.I. The online group has claimed that Democratic politicians are running a child trafficking ring and satanic elites run the world. Despite the group's theories, President Donald Trump has said favorable things about the domestic threat.
“I don’t know much about the movement other than I understand that they like me very much, which I appreciate," Trump said.
Trump has also said that the group is made up of “people who love our country." He later claimed that QAnon is “saving people from the radical left.” However, Trump is not the only politician to support the conspiracy group. Media Matters has reported that more than two dozen political candidates have supported the online movement.
Rep. Tom Malinowski has reportedly faced death threats after the group accused him of protecting child predators. QAnon supporter and congressional candidate Marjorie Taylor Greene went as far as posting a photoshopped picture of herself holding a gun next to Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib.
"Marjorie is strong on everything and never gives up - a real winner," the President said about Greene.
Earlier this month, the U.S. House of Representatives brought forth a resolution condemning the conspiracy group. The resolution passed, but 17 Republicans voted against it.
In light of recent threats, Facebook pledges that the ban will go into effect immediately.
