For the first time in his illustrious career, Los Angeles Lakers Forward LeBron James will grace the cover of the Wheaties cereal box. However, he will not do so alone. The three-time NBA Champion will be joined by the students of his I Promise School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.
“Growing up where we come from, to see my I Promise kids and families from Akron, Ohio, represented on the iconic Wheaties box means everything,” James said.
“From starting the LeBron James Family Foundation, to boldly speaking out on racial injustice, to launching the I Promise School — LeBron is a champion of change who is using his sports platform to better the world. We couldn’t be prouder to feature such a positive force of inspiration for the next generation of champions on Wheaties’ historic box," Wheaties Brand Experience Manager Taylor Gessell added.
Opening in 2018, the James-led school offers a safe haven for academically at-risk youth in the area. With the help of the institution, students are mentored through high school and offered a full-scholarship to Akron University upon graduation. More information about the school's mission and purpose will be highlighted on the back of the cereal box.
"The movement we’ve started in Akron is about doing our part to uplift our community by first listening and then responding with the resources they need. We will continue to do everything we can to create a better future for our kids and our community, and it starts with the students, teachers, and everyday champions you see on this box," James added.
While James celebrates this recent accomplishment, he will chase his fourth NBA Championship. With a 102-96 win against the Miami Heat on Tuesday, LeBron James is one victory away from his fourth NBA Championship. If he is able to pull through one more time, he would win his first title in four years and the Los Angeles Lakers would tie the Boston Celtics for the most titles in NBA history. James and the Lakers will take the court on Friday at 9 p.m. in Orlando for game five of the NBA Finals.
