Kyle Rittenhouse will not be charged for the rifle he allegedly used during a shooting that left two people dead and one injured during protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Lake County state's attorney's office said they are not filing gun charges against the the 17-year-old because it was purchased, stored and used in Wisconsin. This did not violate Illinois law, and officials added that there was no evidence to prove Rittenhouse was in possession of the gun in Illinois.
Rittenhouse is facing six criminal charges, including first-degree intentional homicide, for the August 25 shooting in Kenosha. Demonstrators swelled in the city after a white police officer shot Jacob Blake in the back multiple times. Video footage showed an armed Rittenhouse running away and saying "I just killed someone" after a protestor was shot. The accused shooter is being held without bond at an Illinois juvenile detention center. His next court appearance is scheduled later this month for the extradition hearing.
Last week, an attorney representing Rittenhouse announced plans to sue former Vice President Joe Biden's campaign for libel. The campaign released a video that focused on President Donald Trump's refusal to condemn white supremacy; it also featured Rittenhouse's image.
