Breonna Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, has opened up regarding the impact her daughter's death has had on her. Palmer explained that not only is she mourning the death of Breonna, but she is also concerned about the wellbeing of her youngest daughter as well.
“She’s had to become this activist, this person who’s fighting constantly against the world. It’s sad because she doesn't get to be her 20-year-old-self. I feel a little of who she may have wanted to be has become lost in this,” Palmer said.
“So I have to make sure that she doesn't become a Breonna Taylor. It was just a very unfortunate thing and no family should have to go through it so.”
In the months following Taylor's death, her family participated in countless demonstrations in Kentucky, Washington, D.C. and beyond. The family has also worked to pass "Breonna's Law," legislature that bans the use of no-knock warrants. The city of Louisville also awarded a $12 million settlement to the family of Breonna Taylor. Still, the money nor the passing of legislature will undo the pain of losing a daughter at the age of 26.
“With this settlement I got, there was a lot of reform that I wanted to include, [but] that was just the beginning. There's still a lot of work to be done. There's a lot of policies that still need to be changed. And so I have to become a part of that,” she said.
As the Taylor family has worked to improve society, the general public has joined in. Public figures like LeBron James, Megan Thee Stallion and many others have used their platforms to demand change and offer their prayers for the Taylor household. Also, political figures like Sen. Kamala Harris and former Vice President Joe Biden have contacted the family. Even President Donald Trump commented on the matter after Attorney General Daniel Cameron revealed that no officers would be directly charged for Taylor's death.
“I think it’s a sad thing and I give my regards to the family of Breonna. I also think it’s so sad what is happening, everything about that case including law enforcement,” Trump said.
Despite his public statements, Palmer said that the President has not reached out to her or her family. To that point, Palmer would not want to hear from Trump either.
“No, not that I would even want to hear from him,” Palmer answered when asked if President Donald Trump has contacted her.
“He’s a clown, he’s said what he’s said so many times. He's just another person that I have no desire to deal with through this. I'm out of strength for people like him.”
In these trying times, Palmer remains hopeful and positive about the future because she believes there is "no other way to be."
