The United States of America reported its second highest single-day total for COVID-19 cases on Election Day.
A total of 91,530 new cases were reported nationwide Tuesday, which continued a trend of "staggering case numbers reported within just the past week," CNN reports. The U.S. has experienced five of its highest single-day totals since October 29, which leads experts to expect another surge is coming.
Several states, including Idaho, Ohio, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, reported new record single-day totals for COVID-19 cases on election day.
The national 7-day average for new cases is currently 86,363, which is more than double the total from September 4. Doctors continue to stress basic public health measures and adherence to CDC guidelines, such as wearing masks and social distancing, but those measures still remain a point of contention in certain areas of the country, CNN reports.
Five states, however, are reported to be trending in a positive direction -- Alabama, Hawaii, Louisiana, Tennessee and Vermont -- while at least 36 others are reporting more new cases than last week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University via CNN.
A new report by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association is revealed 61,000 new COVID-19 cases in children were reported during the final week of October 2020, which was the highest one-week spike in COVID-19 cases among children during the pandemic, CNN reports. More than 853,000 children have tested positive for COVID-19 since March, including nearly 200,000 new cases reported in October.
