In the late hours of Election Day (November 3), the Trump campaign and state GOP filed a lawsuit in Chatham County, Georgia–– the Democratic-leaning county seat of Savannah located in the southeast region of the state.
The Trump campaign alleges that 53 ballots in the county’s tally were received after polls closed in the state at 7 p.m.
In the lawsuit filed in the county’s Superior Court, the campaign and Republican party asked a judge to ensure late ballots are tracked, but not counted.
Chatham County Judge James Bass dismissed the lawsuit Thursday (November 5) morning after a one-hour hearing, during which county election officials provided evidence proving the legitimacy of each ballot and that the ballots arriving past the deadline were not being counted.
The Trump campaign has filed lawsuits in two other states, Michigan and Pennsylvania. They have also called for a recount in Wisconsin.
As the country awaits the results of the 2020 election, eyes are zooming in on key battlegrounds including Georgia. There is an estimated 50,000 ballots left to count in Georgia as of noon today, November 5, two days after polls closed. State officials are optimistic about completing the ballot counting process later today (November 5).
