A judge has ruled to unseal evidence in the criminal case against former Louisville Metro police detective involved in the Breonna Taylor shooting, according to WAVE 3.
Brett Hankison was the only LMPD officer to face charges after police executed a warrant at Taylor's apartment in March. She was fatally shot multiple times. The ex-cop was charged with three counts of wanton endangerment for firing into neighboring apartments. Nobody was charged directly in Taylor's death.
Circuit Judge Ann Bailey Smith noted in her ruling that the case evidence doesn't need to be hidden from anyone outside of Hankison’s defense team or Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron’s office.
“This Court ... finds that no sufficient justification was advanced by either the prosecutor or the Defendant to seal the discovery,” Bailey Smith said. The judge added that most of the evidence is already available to the public. She also gave both sides another 30 days to continue to review evidence and propose any redactions.
This news comes after a woman filed a lawsuit against Hankison for alleged sexual assault two years ago. Her attorney also claims Hankison allegedly has a "pattern of behavior" when it comes to preying on vulnerable women at bars.
