The FBI and Spokane police are investigating an incident where a Black student union's virtual meeting was bombarded with racial and homophobic slurs.
On Sunday (November 7), members of the Gonzaga University Black Student Union were holding a Zoom meeting until the call was hacked, according to KOMO. "Several people joined the call using offensive screen names and began yelling racial and homophobic slurs and sharing pornography on their screens," the news station wrote.
University leaders said technical staff were able to capture data of the Zoom-bombing, including IP addresses from the people who hijacked the call.
Gonzaga officials said BSU students requested therapy from someone of the BIPOC community. Gonzaga University said they are "very close" to hiring an individual like that to their staff and are working with BSU on the net steps to take, such as a virtual town hall to address this issue.
Authorities noted that over universities nationwide had similar Zoom-bombings. A Black high school student in South Florida said she may have been the target of racism when someone in her online class started saying a racist slur repeatedly. An attorney representing her claimed the teacher of the class did not address the incident after it happened.
