A wise woman once said, "If at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off and try again." Former City Councilmen Jimmy Goodman took those words to heart and paid off. After falling short of becoming mayor in 2016, he has recently been sworn in as the first Black mayor of Dadeville, Alabama.
“I would like to be the mayor that is for everybody,” Goodman said.
“If you’re a citizen of Dadeville, I am for you.”
Goodman served as a member of city council in Dadeville from 2008 until 2016. He left the council to run for mayor against former Mayor Wayne Smith, but fell short of his goal. Four years later, he defeated Smith by approximately 100 votes. As mayor, he has big plans for the town. He hopes to bring in another grocery store and build a new fire station.
“There are going to be some things that will be difficult to do, but if we have faith, there is nothing too difficult for God to do,” he said.
Goodman's future plans seem to have the support of his constituents. Citizens believe that a new grocery store and fire station will bring new jobs in to the town for years to come.
“Not only just jobs but jobs that will be here for years to come and will be able to financially benefit and help our community,” Alabama resident Shondra Riles said.
