Rep. Cedric Richmond will join the President-Elect Joe Biden's administration next year. Reports suggest that Richmond will take on a more senior role similar to that of Valerie Jarrett in former President Barack Obama's administration.
“I think it's great,” Rep. Jim Clyburn said about Richmond's new role.
“I really believe that he played a very significant role in that campaign. And he is very gifted, very energetic. And he's just at that transitional age."
As a result, Richmond will be forced to resign his seat in the House of Representatives. He has represented Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District since 2011. During his time in Congress, he served on the Judiciary, House Ways and Means and Homeland Security Committees. He is also a member of the New Democratic Coalition and Congressional Black Caucus.
"The future has a habit of arriving unannounced, and I am here to announce the hardest decision of my life,” he said.
“Before Jan. 20, I will resign my seat in the United State Congress and take a position in the Biden-Harris administration.”
Alongside Richmond, Jen O'Malley Dillon, Mike Donilo, Steve Ricchetti, Dana Remus, Annie Tomasini and Julie Rodriguez also earned senior positions in the Biden-Harris administration. Later this week, the incoming administration is expected to make a new wave of hires. Most notably, Symone Sanders and Kate Bedingfield are expected to lead the White House's communications team
"President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris have an ambitious and urgent agenda for action. The team we have already started to assemble will enable us to meet the challenges facing our country on day one," incoming White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain said.
