Police officers in Columbus, Ohio shot and killed a 23-year-old Black man believed to be Casey Goodson on December 4. Officers in Franklin County say they were responding to a shooting in the area when they noticed a man allegedly waving a firearm as he drove by police.
“He was seen driving down the street waving a gun,” US Marshal for the Southern District of Ohio Pete Tobin said.
“That’s when the deputy, at some point after that, he confronted him. And it went badly.”
Officers say that after they confronted the unidentified man, he attempted to exit the vehicle. Tragically, U.S. Marshals have now confirmed that the man who was shot was not connected to the shooting they were investigating. Furthermore, the victim's mother, Tamala Cain, said that her son was not shot in his car. She says the 23-year-old man was killed while inside of his home.
“Police shot him in the back three times through the door. He doesn’t have any warrants, he’s never been in trouble in his life," she said.
“He was shot and killed by the police yesterday. Everything the news and police are saying is a lie. He was gunned down and shot three times in the back through a screen door as he was walking in the house. My baby had a his meal in his hands to go eat," a woman claiming to be his aunt stated.
Despite concerns from the victim's family, Tobin has maintained that he believes the shooting was justified. At this time, it is unclear if there was body camera footage of the incident.
