Stars around the Women's National Basketball Association have rallied behind a pair of high school athletes who have been suspended for wearing t-shirts supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.
While warming up for a recent game, American Heritage High School players Jordana Codio and Khadee Hession wore t-shirts with the phrase "Black Lives Matter" written on the front. The pair was provoked to do so because one of their classmates allegedly posted a racial slur during a virtual class without punishment.
After news of the suspension made its way around social media, a number of WNBA stars voiced their support for the two players. Erica Wheeler of the Indiana Fever, Natasha Cloud of the Washington Mystics and WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart were just a few of the players who chimed in.
"Keep standing for what you believe in," Wheeler wrote on Instagram.
"American Heritage High School, [is] this how you treat black athletes? So, [you] take away the one thing they love because of what they believe in? Wow, [that] says a lot about your school!"
"It’s not a political statement. It’s real life," Stewart added.
American Heritage High School has not yet issued a statement regarding the most recent developments involving Codio and Hession. Codio and Hession's teammates are reportedly expected to take on Schoolhouse Prep later this week. It is unclear if the duo will be allowed to participate in the game as their team strives to earn a 6-1 start to the 2020 season.
