Morgan State University received an unexpected surprise as MacKenzie Scott made a generous donation to the historic university. Scott donated $40 million to Maryland's largest historically Black university. It is the largest gift to the university in its 153-year history.
“This monumental gift will change lives and shape futures,” Morgan State University President David Wilson said.
“I thank Ms. Scott for her due diligence and acknowledgment of the substantive value Morgan offers to so many throughout this nation and around the world, and entrusting that we will ensure the enduring impact of her generosity is truly transformational for many years to come.”
The $40 million donation will help jumpstart the school's "Learning The World" fund. It will help out students, faculty and improve academic programs across campus.
Morgan State is not the only HBCU rejoicing this morning. Virginia State University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Bowie State University all received donations upwards of $20 million. Over the last few months, Scott has donated more than $4 billion to charities like the Jackie Robinson Foundation and institutions like Howard University. Scott hopes to give the majority of her wealth “back to the society that helped generate it.”

“The impact of Ms. Scott’s gift will reverberate profoundly into the future as we prepare the next generations of leaders and scholars in the arts and sciences.”
