The Louisville Metro Police Department has cut ties with detectives Myles Cosgrove and Joshua Jaynes for their involvement in the death of Breonna Taylor. Attorneys for both Cosgrove and Jayne confirmed that the two former detectives were served pre-termination letters by Chief Yvette Gentry earlier this week.
"We intend to show up to the pre-termination hearing on Dec. 31 and we're going to contest this action, although I'm not optimistic about Interim Chief Gentry changing her decision," Jaynes' attorney, Thomas Clay, said.
Jaynes was not involved in the raid on March 13, but he did secure the search warrant for the maneuver. The former detective secured the warrant by claiming Taylor's ex-boyfriend, Jamarcus Glover, was receiving packages at her apartment that were connected to a drug investigation. However, Jaynes never confirmed this information with the postal inspector.
"These are extreme violations of our policies, which endangered others," Gentry said.
After the warrant was secure, Cosgrove joined Brett Hankinson and Jonathan Mattingly as they entered Taylor's apartment. Ultimately, Cosgrove was one of multiple officers who fired gunshots that killed Taylor.
Hankinson is facing wanton endangerment charges for firing shots that landed in nearby apartments. In contrast, Jaynes and Cosgrove were not criminally charged for their involvement in Taylor's death. However, all three men have been let go by the Louisville Metro Police Department.
Jaynes and Cosgrove will appear for pre-termination hearings this week. It is unlikely that Gentry's decision will be overturned. LMPD has declined to comment on the matter further until the process is complete.
