Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving offered a few late Christmas gifts to nine college students. The 2016 NBA Champion has offered to pay the tuition of nine students at Lincoln University. Tyki Irving of the KAI Family Foundation delivered the news through a Zoom call over the holidays.
“We’re here today to honor you for your commitment to your education. We hope that we’re able to serve you today,” she said.
“And moving forward, with just a small gratitude of your resilience, and your pursuit of being professional young Black men and women, kings and queens."
Irving has used much of the last two years to give back to others. Earlier this year, the NBA star offered $1.5 million to players who opted out of playing in the WNBA bubble this summer. He has also donated nearly $400,000 to Feeding America during the pandemic. As his latest donation was distributed via Zoom, he offered a few words of encouragement for the young students.
“I’m grateful for all you young leaders. You know, I wouldn’t be sitting in my position and embracing who I am without knowing where I come from and people helping me along the way. Just paying it forward," he told the students.
“Servitude is something that we all have a choice in. You know, and I’ve committed to my service a long time ago. I’m walking the steps right now and I want the same for others."
Irving will now direct his attention towards the early portion of the 2020-2021 NBA season. The Nets will take the court on January 5 to battle the Utah Jazz at the Barclays Center.
