While reporting on the alarming rate of COVID-19 deaths in Los Angeles and surrounding areas of California, CNN correspondent Sara Sidner broke into tears.
Sara was reporting live from the Los Angeles' MLK Community Hospital on Monday (January 11), covering the stories of those who’ve lost their lives to the coronavirus, and the communities of color bearing the brunt of the surge.
She was talking and tried to hold back tears, got choked up, and tried to start again.
Sidner explained she’d visited 10 hospitals that were overrun with COVID-19 patients, and eventually, she had to stop.
News Anchor Alisyn Camerota immediately took over and thanked Sara for the compassion she demonstrated in her reporting since last year, providing viewers with on-the-ground news coverage of the pandemic, murder of George Floyd and the months of protests that followed, the election, and more.
Sara took to social media posting, “I’m still not okay after seeing the heartbreak in the City of Angels because of coronavirus” she wrote in a tweet, the emotional toll of the pandemic, becoming even more apparent.
Right now, CNN reports that LA County is seeing a COVID-19-related death every eight minutes. Hospitals around the state of California are completely full, turning patients away and rationing oxygen in an attempt to serve more patients with less supplies.
Funeral homes around the country are contending with growing numbers of bodies, some states ordering refrigerated trucks to keep up with demand.
Since January 1, 2021, there have been over 30,000 COVID-19-related deaths in the US, according to data collected by The New York Times.
