Kamala Harris was sworn in on Wednesday (January 20) as the nation’s first female, Black and South Asian American vice president; a barrier-breaking moment in U.S. history.
Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman, who bravely diverted a pro-Trump mob from the House chamber during the Capitol attack on January 6, escorted vice president Harris to the Capitol building for the inauguration ceremony.
Sonia Sotomayor, the nation's first Latina Supreme Court justice, administered the vice-presidential oath of office to the former U.S. Senator.
Harris chose to be sworn in using two Bibles, one from the late Thurgood Marshall, the first Black supreme court justice, and one from Regina Shelton, a close family friend.
The vice-president took her oath moments before Joe Biden was sworn in as the nation’s 46th president.
Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff, who will be referred to as the second gentleman, will reside at the Naval Observatory, the traditional home of the sitting vice-president.
