Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama are set to appear in an upcoming Black History Month special for YouTube. According to The Hill, the special will honor "Black creators, artists, writers, storytellers, and history makers who have shaped our nation's history."
The Obamas will not be the only stars who take part in the event. Podcaster and media personality Jemele Hill, rapper Tobe Nwigwe, activist Killer Mike and late-night talk show hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero will participate in the Black History Month program.
"[Black Renaissance will feature] the next generation of Black voices who are reimagining our future," YouTube stated.
“By choosing art as the lens to further explore Black history, we hope to inspire our audience to continue embracing Black culture in all its various forms," YouTube executive Nadine Zylstra added.
YouTube's "Black Renaissance" adds to a month of incredible Black History Month projects. Apple will celebrate the month by putting together a series of collections highlighting Black authors, artists and tastemakers. Elsewhere, the National Museum of African-American History and Culture is hosting a series of panels to highlight the accomplishments of Black Americans in history. IHeartRadio is also hosting the "Living Black" special on February 20. Roddy Ricch, 21 Savage, Jhené Aiko and Kirk Franklin will deliver special performances on February 20.
“Black culture is American culture and this past year especially has resulted in much needed and long overdue conversations about the role of race in America,” iHeartMedia executive Doc Wynter said.
“‘iHeartRadio’s Living Black!’ will use iHeartMedia’s unparalleled reach to help shape these conversations and celebrate Black culture at scale – reaching hundreds of millions of listeners on iHeartMedia stations across all of our formats.”
The Obamas will make their Black History Month special appearance on February 26 on YouTube.
