The family of Rayshard Brooks came together over the weekend to celebrate what would have been his 28th birthday. The Brooks family gathered at the Wendy's where Brooks was killed to release balloons and sign a birthday card in his memory.
“I don’t ever want him to be forgotten and I also don’t want other people whose name has been forgotten,” Brooks widow, Tomika Miller, said.
“We need to bring that back up. I didn’t know how much police injustice there was until my husband died.”
Brooks was shot on June 12, 2020, during an altercation with police at the aforementioned Wendy's on University Avenue in Atlanta. Brooks was transported to the hospital after the shooting, but died shortly thereafter. Coupled with the police killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, the shooting of Rayshard Brooks sent shockwaves around the country. In the days that followed, protesters took to the streets and the Wendy's was turned into a memorial.
The two officers involved in the shooting, Garrett Rolfe and Devin Brosnan, have both been charged. Rolfe is facing a felony murder charge and Brosnan has been hit with an aggravated assault charge. Most recently, Fulton County District Attorney Fanni Willis has referred the case to Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr.
“Now you have a situation to where we don’t know who is going to deal with my husband’s case and because it’s high profile we have to worry about if someone even wants to put up with this case,” Miller explained.
At this time, it is unclear when a trial regarding the shooting would begin.
