Voting rights activist and former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams has earned a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Abrams played an integral part in the most recent presidential election. Through her organization, Fair Fight Action, Abrams was able to educate, empower and mobilized thousands of voters in November 2020. Most notably, her advocacy for free and fair election processes has been tied to President Joe Biden's upset victory over former President Donald Trump in Abrams's home state, Georgia.
“Abrams’ work follows in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s footsteps in the fight for equality before the law and for civil rights,” Lars Haltbrekken of the Norwegian Parliament said.
“Abrams’ efforts to complete King’s work are crucial if the United States of America shall succeed in its effort to create fraternity between all its peoples and a peaceful and just society."
Abrams is the latest figure to earn a nomination for the prestigious honor. Over the weekend, the Black Lives Matter movement earned a nomination from Norwegian MP Petter Eide.
"We hold the largest social movement in global history. Today, we have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. People are waking up to our global call: for racial justice and an end to economic injustice, environmental racism, and white supremacy. We're only getting started," Black Lives Matter tweeted after learning of the nomination.
Abrams and the Black Lives Matter movement join a long list of public advocates to receive a nomination. Former President Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have received the award. Furthermore, if Abrams or the women who steer the Black Lives Matter Movement were to win the award they'd enter into more sacred territory as few Black women have ever won a Nobel Prize.
Winners will be decided and the recipients will participate in a ceremony in December.
