Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church delivered a spirited presentation of the national anthem ahead of Super Bowl LV on Sunday night (February 7).
Moments before tonight’s big game, the Grammy-nominated R&B songstress, 33, and the Grammy-nominated country crooner, 43, took centerfield to honor the United States of America with a harmonious rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Church opened the patriotic duet by performing the national anthem on an electric guitar, with Sullivan soaring in shortly after with her powerhouse vocals.
Sullivan and Church’s performance marks a significant moment in Super Bowl history, as this year marks the 30th anniversary of the late Whitney Houston’s incomparable national anthem performance at Super Bowl XXV in 1991.
Speaking to The Los Angeles Times, Church described his patriotic performance with Sullivan as a symbolic and important moment for our times. “With what’s going on in America, it feels like an important time for a patriotic moment,” he told the outlet. “An important time for unity. The fact that I’m a Caucasian country singer and she’s an African American R&B singer — I think the country needs that.”
Later tonight, The Weeknd will take the stage to deliver a thrilling Super Bowl Halftime Show as the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
