In a victory during the first round of the Australian Open, tennis champion Serena Williams stunted an outfit inspired by the fastest woman in the world, Florence Griffith Joyner.
Flo-Jo, as she was called, was a legendary track star whose world record for the 100 meters and 200 meters races has yet to be broken since she set them in 1988.
Aside from her athletic prowess, Joyner was also known for fashion sense, often sporting flashy, envelope-pushing outfits that left one leg out and the other covered in clinging metallic fabric.
During the Open on Monday (February 8), Serena sported a pink, red, and black outfit similar to the fashion of the late, great Flo-Jo.
“Her outfits were always amazing,” Williams said after winning against Laura Siegemund.
Williams said Joyner was “a wonderful track athlete,” and credited her fashion team for the outfit idea and selection.“We thought, ‘What can we do to keep elevating the Serena Williams on the court,” she said.
Joyner, who died in 1998, might’ve approved of the fashion nod from Williams.
Williams, too, is known for her own eye-catching fashion sense on the tennis court. In 2018, at the French Open, she wore a “Black Panther”- inspired catsuit, and a lavender tutu at the US Open in the same year.
