There’s a new Tina Turner documentary headed to HBO. The film, Tina, is slated to premiere on March 27.
Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin are co-directors on the project which is described as “a revealing and intimate look at the life and career of musical icon Tina Turner, charting her improbable rise to early fame, her personal and professional struggles throughout her life, and her even more improbable resurgence as a global phenomenon in the Eighties.”
In the documentary, fans can expect archival footage and an all-new interview with the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” herself at her home in Zurich, Switzerland, along with archival footage spanning more than 60 years of her life and iconic musical career.
This isn’t the first time Tina Turner’s life story has been made into a movie. Angela Bassett played Tina Turner in the 1993 classic, What’s Love Got to Do With It. In 2018, playwright Katori Hall brought Ms. Turner’s life on the Broadway stage with the musical, Tina.
The documentary will also feature interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Angela Bassett, and journalist Kurt Loder, who helped write Turner’s 1986 autobiography, I, Tina. Turner’s husband, former record executive Erwin Bach, will also be featured in the documentary.
The network made the announcement of the documentary on Tuesday (February 10), the same day Turner was nominated as a solo artist for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 2021 class. Her 1991 induction into the Rock Hall of Fame was with Ike Turner.
