The second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump has unearthed a few videos documenting the chaos that took place on January 6 at the U.S. Capitol. One of the videos that has garnered a large amount of attention show officer Eugene Goodman and a few others guiding Senators Chuck Schumer and Mitt Romney to safety. During the video, Sen. Mitt Romney can be seen walking toward the riots until Goodman and company pointed him in the opposite direction.
"I expressed my appreciation to him for coming to my aid and getting me back into the path of safety and expressed my appreciation for all that he did that day, and he took me through his full day," Romney told reporters on Wednesday.
The short video was central to the arguments made during the latest impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate. While it still appears unlikely that Democrats will be able to garner the 67 votes needed to impeach former President Donald Trump, it does appear that the videos shown on Tuesday and Wednesday have highlighted the chaos of the Capitol Hill Riots. Furthermore, it does appear that support for Goodman and other members of the Capitol Police force has grown substantially.
“As we all know now, but for the heroism of Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman and other law enforcement officers who took (rioters) in a different direction to the police line, they very likely would have gotten here,” Rep. David Cicilline said.
The most talked-about video thus far has been the 13-minute clip shown on the first day of the trial. Officers are shown trying to control a violent mob and rioters are shown damaging property. There is also a clip of Ashli Babbit being shot and killed as she joined violent rioters in their attempt to siege the Capitol.
The impeachment trial will continue Thursday morning and more videos of the January 6 riots may be revealed.
