Wanda Cooper-Jones, the mother of Ahmaud Arbery, is marking the one-year anniversary of his death with a candlelight vigil.
Cooper-Jones told TMZ that relatives and friends of Ahmaud’s will be coming together at his final resting place on February 23 to honor his life.
She’s asked that everyone attending wear a blue ribbon as a symbol of solidarity, and in memory of what happened a year ago. Blue was his favorite color.
Arbery was fatally shot by three white men in Brunswick, Georgia last year while out for a jog. The men, Travis and Gregory McMichael and William Bryan, were arrested and charged with murder in connection with Ahmaud's death. The case, which has been surrounded in controversy, sparked national outrage and fueled protests last year as calls for the country to face its ongoing racist roots and violence.
In addition to the candlelight vigil, Ahmaud’s family is working to start a foundation in his honor. This foundation would be separate from the 2.23 Foundation, which the family is not associated with.
Wanda Cooper-Jones also shared that the family is planning to share a meal together along with their attorney Lee Merritt, to share stories and company with one another.
