Phoenix Suns Guard Chris Paul has announced that he will release his memoir, Sixty-One: Life Lessons from Papa, On and Off the Court, in September. Co-written by ESPN's Michael Wilbon, the memoir will discuss his upbringing, NBA career and much more. The title of the book also pays tribute to his late grandfather, Nathaniel Jones. On the day that Jones passed away at the age of 61, Paul scored 61 points in a high school basketball game.
"Sixty-One is a celebration of my Papa Chilly who helped shape who I am today and what I value," Paul stated.
"His legacy of hard work and service to others is woven through the fabric of my parenting, my community work and how I have approached my basketball career. That high school game where I scored 61 points was a healing moment through basketball and I am thrilled to work with Michael Wilbon to share this story with the world."
Paul is not only writing a book inspired by his late grandfather. He is also making a movie about him as well. Last year, Paul announced that he would be partnering with Disney+ to develop a film based on his memoir.
"I can confirm that we are developing a biographical film for Disney+ with another NBA superstar, Chris Paul, whose past includes a deeply-moving story of family, legacy and destiny that helped make him who he is today. As you can tell, I do watch a fair amount of ESPN myself," a Disney+ spokesperson said in December.
While Paul develops his film and finishes up his book, the Phoenix Suns will continue their push for the 2021 NBA Playoffs. Phoenix currently sits at fifth in the Western Conference with a record of 17-10. Paul, Devin Booker, DeAndre Ayton and the Suns will take on the New Orleans Pelicans at 7 p.m. on Friday.
