The US Capitol Police Department announced Thursday (February 18) that it had suspended six of its officers with pay and placed 29 others under investigation for their actions on January 6.
“Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman has directed that any member of her department whose behavior is not in keeping with the Department’s Rules of Conduct will face appropriate discipline,” John Stolnis, a spokesman for the department told CNN.
The announcement comes following the acquittal of Donald Trump during his second impeachment trial.
Back in January several outlets reported that officers had been placed under investigation in the immediate aftermath of the Capitol riot.
Several videos from that day circulated social media, including one Capitol police officer who posed for a selfie with members of the mob who illegally breached the building. That officer is among those who’ve been suspended, according to Rep. Tim Ryan.
Additionally, an officer who put on a “Make America Great Again” hat and started directing rioters around the building has also been suspended.
The investigation by the FBI and Department of Justice remains ongoing as officials comb through video to identify people and officers of the law who participated in the deadly violence.
