Medical professionals at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center have issued a statement following a horrific car crash involving Tiger Woods. The golf superstar was involved in a single-car accident on Tuesday morning while traveling near the Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes. Authorities said that the 15-time major champion was driving at a "relatively greater speed than normal" in an area that has a "high frequency of accidents." Woods was later extracted from the vehicle using the "jaws of life" and transported to a nearby hospital.
"Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery," Anish Mahajan of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center said.
"Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required the surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling."
As news of the incident spread, more details regarding Woods' recent activities spread. Most notably, fans learned that Woods spent the day playing golf with three-time NBA Champion Dwyane Wade. The two talked about golf, family and even posted a video of them joking around on the course. Wade later learned about the accident after taking a nap on Tuesday.
"I woke up to the news [after taking a nap on Tuesday]. Just like everybody out there, my thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones because we all were shaken and shook at that moment, not knowing what happened with Tiger," he said.
"Just my prayers go out to him and hopefully a speedy recovery for him and hopefully he gets a chance to get back to doing what he loves to do and that's playing the game of golf and I'm just thankful that he took the time to be able to teach me a few things about the game yesterday."
