Jody Watley Named Ambassador Of National Museum Of African American Music

Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Jody Watley was recently named the National Museum of African American Music’s first ever Membership Ambassador.

The “Don’t You Want Me” singer is considered to be a pioneer in 21st century pop music, fusing multiple genres of music, together in chart-topping ways. The Chicago native made her start as a popular dancer on Soul Train at 14-years-old. Before starting her solo music career, Watley was a member of the luminary R&B funk group Shalamar during the late 70s and early 80s.

Watley is also recognized for the ways she innovated fashion trends by blending high fashion pieces with iconic street fashion style of the 1980s, in her music videos and performances throughout her career.

“I’m excited to assist the National Museum of African American Music with engagement and awareness-building opportunities,” the singer said in a statement.

“I am thrilled to be the inaugural membership ambassador for this amazing and necessary music museum,” Watley added. In her role, she’ll be promoting the museum, and building engagement.

The Museum is located in downtown Nashville, Tennessee and opened last fall. It features multiple galleries showcasing the rich history of Black music.

Members of the museum get unlimited admission, exclusive access to events and programs, discounts in the gift shop, and more.
