The second time is the charm! That is what Cam Newton and the New England Patriots are hoping as they head into the 2021-2022 NFL season. Multiple reports indicate that the former NFL MVP is set to sign a one-year deal to remain with the team.
Newton signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots heading into the 2020-2021 NFL season. The team hopped out to a fast start with wins against the Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse after Newton tested positive for COVID-19. Illness coupled with players sitting out the season for health reasons, the Patriots took a turn for the worse and lost four straight games. The team seemingly never regained the momentum they had at the start of the season. Ultimately, Newton finished with eight touchdowns, 10 interceptions and less than 3,000 yards. Despite the tough 2020-2021 campaign, Newton repeatedly said he was open to returning to the Patriots.
"I'm getting tired of changing [teams]," he said.
"I am at a point in my career where I know way more than I did last year. Yes, I would go back."
With another off-season, the return of key defensive starters and a strong 2021 NFL Draft, the Patriots hope Newton will take the next step. Meanwhile, former New England Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady has also signed a new deal. Ironically, Brady and the Buccaneers announced that they had agreed to a four-year deal around the same time that the news about Newton broke. Brady and Tampa Bay will look to defend their Super Bowl title in the upcoming season.
The NFL Draft is set for April 29 and the season is set to kick off in early September.
