On Tuesday (March 16), CBS announced they will extend The Talk’s hiatus following additional allegations of racism against one of the show’s hosts, Sharon Osbourne. According to an exclusive report by Page Six, Elaine Welteroth, a new co-host of the show, filed a complaint against Osbourne following the on-air heated exchange in which Osbourne demanded co-host Sheryl Underwood “educate” her on racism.
The exchange stemmed from Osbourne’s defense of Piers Morgan, who came under fire for his dismissal of Meghan Markle’s struggles with mental health and racism while a working member of the Royal Family during the March 7 sit-down interview with Oprah. Now, the outlet is reporting former colleagues of Osbourne are speaking out with new allegations.
Former co-host Sara Gilbert and Julie Chen alleged Osbourne used multiple racial, homophobic, and xenophobic slurs against them. Gilbert, who identifies as lesbian, claims Osbourne referred to her as “fish eater.” She reportedly called Chen, who is Chinese, “wonton.” These allegations were revealed by Osbourne’s former colleague Leah Remini who shared the details with journalist Yashar Ali, who shared his report on Twitter.
Actress Holly Robinson Pete revealed that Osbourne had said she was “too ghetto” to be on the show and was fired shortly after. Osbourne denies these claims.
Howard Bragman, Osbourne’s publicist, told Page Six, “The only thing worse than a disgruntled former employee is a disgruntled former talk show host,” in response to Remini’s allegations.
CBS is reportedly continuing its internal review and the show’s hiatus will be extended for another week.
