Aaron McGruder Will Return With A New Season Of The Boondocks In 2022

The Boondocks will return for a fifth season in 2022. The news was confirmed through the show's official Instagram account over the weekend. In addition to a scheduled return, the show has also launched the release of NFTs created by artist Seung Kim. Kim will also work alongside series creator Aaron McGruder to produce the show's first season since 2014. Previously, McGruder walked away from the show in 2010 before Cartoon Network moved to release a new season without his involvement in 2014.

McGruder will usher in not one, but two seasons of the show in the near future. In 2019, McGrudger inked a deal with HBO Max to develop two 12 episode seasons. The show was originally set to return in 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed several television series in recent weeks.

“There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today. It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun," McGruder said.

“The Boondocks was a revolutionary series that sparked conversations on hot-button issues and brought dark subjects into the light with episodes like ‘The Trial of Robert Kelly’, ‘The Fundraiser’ and ‘The Story of Gangstalicious. Aaron is a gifted visionary whose unique style of storytelling is a welcome voice and we are elated The Freemans are making their thugnificent comeback on HBO Max," HBO Max Chief Content Officer Kevin Reilly added.

There is no word as to when in 2022 the show will return. Furthermore, it is unclear who will take the place of Jebediah "Granddad" Freeman. The late John Witherspoon provided the voice for Grandad over the course of four seasons before his passing in 2019.
