John Lewis’ Latest Graphic Novel To Be Released Posthumously In August

The newest addition to the series of graphic novels about the late Rep. John Lewis’ life is set to be released August 3 this year, publisher Abrams ComicArt announced

This latest book, Run: Book One will be the sequel of the “March” trilogy that was an autobiographical series about Lewis’ life as a civil rights activist and congressman.

Lewis co-wrote the “March” graphic novel series with Andrew Aydin. That series ends with a 25-year-old Lewis attending the famous march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama to fight for voting rights.

Illustrator Nate Powell and L. Fury are set to continue the late voting rights advocate’s story in Run: Book One which is set to cover the “struggles seen across the United State after the Selma voting rights campaign,” the publisher said in a statement

The book’s release will come a year after Lewis’ death at 80 years old in July 2020.

“In sharing my story, it is my hope that a new generation will be inspired by Run to actively participate in the democratic process and help build a more perfect Union here in America,” Lewis said in a statement about the book before his death

The series has received acclaim since the first book’s release in 2013. March: Book 3 was a number one New York Times Best-Seller and won the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature in 2016.

In 2015, Lewis attended the Comic-Con International to promote his graphic novel. He even dressed up in the same trench coat and backpack he wore in 1965 during the march in Selma.

Lewis’ legacy lives on through his books and his life’s work, as lawmakers and advocates continue to fight for voting rights, especially those in his home state of Georgia.
