Ohio Democrat Nina Turner Raises $1.6M For Congressional Run

Nina Turner, a Democrat from Ohio, raised $1.6 million during the first quarter of 2021 in support of her campaign to run for congress. Turner is one of seven candidates running to fill Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge’s seat in the House.

The Hill reported that Turner is a former Ohio state senator and serves as the president of the group Our Revolution, a progressive coalition based in the state.

Fudge stepped down as a US Representative of Ohio’s 11th Congressional District when she was confirmed for her role in President Biden’s Cabinet last month.

Since December 2020, Turner has raised over $2.2 million for her campaign.

The other candidates in the race, The Hill reported, are Shontel Brown, a councilwoman from Cuyahoga County, former state. Reps. John Barnes Jr. and Bryan Flannery, former state Sens. Jeff Johnson and Shirley Smith, and Tariq Shabazz, a Navy veteran.

The candidates will go through a primary election on August 3, the winner of which will determine who is Democratic nominee for the November 2 special election.

On Monday (April 5) Brown’s campaign announced she raised $640,000 in the first quarter of the year, making her total funds raised to $680,000 since December.

The winner of the election will represent residents from the area of the state from Cleveland to Akron, a Democratic stronghold area. Republican Laverne Gore is expected to run for the seat in November.
