Tuesday was one of the hardest days Katie Wright has likely ever experienced. As she prepares funeral arrangements for her son, Daunte Wright, she learned the name of the officer who killed her son, Kim Potter. As Potter resigned from the police force, Katie Wright showed unbelievable strength as she addressed a crowd during a press conference in Minnesota. During the presser, the grieving mother recounted the final conversation she had with her 20-year-old son before he was shot and killed.
Standing alongside attorney Ben Crump, Wright told the crowd that her son had called her as he was being pulled over by Potter. As Potter and her partner approached the vehicle, Wright said that she could her an officer asking her son to put down his phone. From there, Wright said that the officer told her son that he would tell her son why he was being pulled over after he got out of the car.
"Daunte put the phone down and I heard some scuffling, he got out of the car and I could hear the police officers scuffling with him," she explained.
In the process of exiting the car, Wright could hear an officer asking her son to hang up the phone. Concerned for her son's safety, Wright tried calling again and again to no avail.
“I didn’t know what was going on and I never imagined this was going to happen. I just thought maybe he was being arrested,” Wright told the group of reporters.
Then, she received the news that no parent ever wants to hear. A girl who was in the car with her son called her back with tears in her eyes. She quickly explained what had happened and told her that her son was unresponsive.
“It was on FaceTime and … she was crying and screaming and she said that they shot him. Then she pointed the phone toward the driver’s seat and my son was laying there, unresponsive," she said as she fought back tears.
“That was the last time that I’ve seen my son, that’s the last time I heard from my son and I have had no explanation since then."
