Percy "Master P" Miller has always been known to shake the table and try doing things in a new way. This fall, he and his son, Hercy Miller, are journeying into a space that college sports have never gone before.
In just a few months, Hercy Miller will travel to Nashville to attend Tennessee State University. While there, he will play Division I basketball for the historically Black university. When he steps on the court, he may do so as the highest-paid athlete in college sports. His father, Percy Miller, has recently announced that he has landed him a $2.5 million endorsement deal.
“In August, the league is changing, the NCAA. You’ll be able to make money off your likeness [and] you’ll be able to do marketing deals,” Miller told TMZ.
“I told Hercy he’ll probably be the highest-paid college player in college basketball history if he does this deal. Guys that are going to the G League, they’re not even getting that type of money.”
In years past, Miller would not be able to accept a $2.5 million endorsement deal. However, the NCAA recently ruled that college athletes could accept revenue for their name, image or likeness. These rules are set to go into effect this August when Miller steps foot on campus for his freshman year.
Hercy Miller is a three-star basketball recruit who was ranked as the fifth-best shooting guard in the state of Minnesota. After receiving offers from LSU, USC and UCLA, Miller choose to attend Tennessee State University.
“I feel like if I go to an HBCU, I can put a spotlight on for all the HBCUs around so that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to make a change. I want to make a difference,” Miller said about his decision to attend the university.
“I’m the type of person, I want to be a leader. I want to lead my people. I feel like going to Tennessee State University, I can be part of community and be a player at the same time.”
