Ex-Cop Who Killed Tamir Rice Makes Attempt To Get Reinstated

The former Cleveland police officer who fatally shot Tamir Rice in 2014, Timothy Loehmann, is seeking to get his job back and he has help from a police union.

Loehmann, according to The Washington Post, submitted a request to have the Ohio Supreme Court review his termination from the department, making him the second ex-officer to try to get their job back following a high-profile police shooting.

Loehmann is also getting help from the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, which represents Cleveland police officers. The union tried to help Loehmann get his job back last month, but a three-panel judge upheld his termination and said the group didn’t file papers on time.

Loehmann was fired from the Cleveland Police Department in 2017 after internal affairs officials said he lied on his job application. According to that investigation, Loehmann said he left another police department for “personal reasons,” but documents show that the original department said Loehmann was unfit to be a police officer due to “an inability to emotionally function,” The Post reported.

The union is asking the state’s highest court to send the case to an appeals court, claiming that Loehmann’s termination violated bargaining agreements between the Union and the city of Cleveland.

News of Loehmann’s attempts to get back on the Cleveland police force comes after Tamir’s family asked the US Department of Justice to reopen its investigation into the 12-year-old’s killing. The DOJ had closed its investigation late last year, during the final weeks of Donald Trump’s presidency.
