The Milwaukee City Council has awarded a $750,000 settlement to former Milwaukee Bucks Guard Sterling Brown. The Milwaukee Police Department also promised to embrace "a policy of anti-racism" and establish "a new disciplinary matrix."
Brown's legal battle with the city of Milwaukee stems from an incident in 2018. Initially, officers claimed that Brown became confrontational with them after they chastised him for parking in a handicapped space. However, video of the incident showed the opposite. Officers appear to confront Brown and use force against him.
Three years after the incident, Brown has been awarded by the city. With this step forward, Brown is still pushing for more change in Milwaukee.
"We have a lot of work to do, and I can't get complacent and just relax because there was one settlement that was able to be approved," Brown said.
"It's going to have a great impact, but ... how can we continue to make sure that these things are enforced? How can we continue to make, you know, advances and strides in the areas that we do still need help?"
Brown suggests that the city implement more preventive tactics to avoid situations getting to this point.
"We don't want to be in a situation where we are in a settlement and we need video footage. ... We want to be able to prevent it," Brown added.
"We want to be able to meet things head-on before it even happens and allow us ... allow the citizens in the community to be at peace when they walk into their neighborhoods."
