ABC has experienced a bit of change over the last few weeks. Fan-favorite Jesse Williams announced that he would be leaving the Shonda Rhimes-led show, Grey's Anatomy. Shortly after, Kenya Barris let fans know that Black-ish and Mixed-ish would both be leaving the network. Not to mention, Grown-ish will likely end after its upcoming fourth season. Thankfully, there is an exciting slate of shows ready to step in and fill the void.
ABC is stepping up its game in the coming weeks with the release of its new lineup. Leading the way, Tyler James Williams and Quinta Brunson will step into to their respective classrooms for the hilariously honest series, Abbott Elementary. Adding on, Don Cheadle will take on the lead role of the Wonder Years reboot. Rounding out the new slate of series coming to the Disney-owned network, Jay-Z and Will Smith are set to deliver a new anthology series exploring the civil rights movement called Women of the Movement.
The first season of Women of the Movement will highlight the life of activist Mamie Till-Mobley. Thrust into the Civil Rights Movement after the murder of her son, Emmett Till, Till-Mobley became a trailblazer and changemaker throughout the nation.
"In 1955, [Mamie Till-Mobley] risks her life to find justice after her son, Emmett, is brutally murdered in the Jim Crow South. Unwilling to let Emmett’s murder disappear from the headlines, Mamie chooses to bear her pain on the world stage, emerging as an activist for justice and igniting the Civil Rights movement as we know it today," the series description reads, according to Shadow & Act.
Adrienne Warren will play the lead while Cedric Joe will portray Emmett Till. Ray Fisher, Chris Coy, Glynn Turman, Carter Jenkins, Mose Wright and Julia McDermott will also star in the series. Gina Pryce Bythewood is set to direct the show's opening episode. A premiere date has not been set, but the network has said that new episodes will air on Tuesdays.
