The Shabazz Center has announced the launch of a new scholarship put together in honor of Malcolm X and his wife, Betty Shabazz. The Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Scholarship Fund will award three students with scholarships of $10,000 each.
“My father, Malcolm X once said that, ‘Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today," Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz's daughter, Iliyasah Shabazz, said.
"The opportunity to support young developing leaders and change-makers through the Scholly Scholarship in partnership with The Shabazz Center is such a rewarding investment that equally honors the lasting legacy of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz.”
The $30,000 scholarship fund was put together in partnership with Scholly. Founded by Christopher Gray at Drexel University, the app helps students from around the world easily access scholarships, grants and funds that will help underprivileged students pay for college and other educational endeavors.
“Malcolm X and his wife Betty Shabazz are icons of the civil rights movement so the Scholly team is excited to be a part of this program to help empower even more students…also to announce such a program on Malcolm X’s birthday is a great way to honor his legacy," Gray added.
The scholarship fund was launched just in time for Malcolm X's birthday. This week, the civil rights visionary would have turned 96 years old. As he continues to make an impact on the world today, Common, Rep. Ayanna Pressley and several others wished the late author a happy birthday.
"On today, his 96th birthday, I am remembering Malcolm X (el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz) and praying for his dear daughters, including my powerful sister-friend, Ilyasah Shabazz," Bernice King tweeted.
While he and his wife are no longer to celebrate with the world in a physical sense, their memory will live on through this scholarship fund. Applicants for the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Scholarship Fund are now available to students. The deadline. to apply is July 19.
