Conservative political commentator Candace Owens’ husband, George Farmer, was named CEO of the controversial social networking app, Parler. Farmer, who is a British conservative political figure, is taking up the role as the app returns to the Apple app store. It was removed from the store after the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.
Farmer is assuming the role from interim CEO Mark Meckler, who is leaving the company. Owens’ husband, who was a supporter of the Brexit movement, has been with the company since March.
“For the past two months I have worked with an incredible team of people, under the leadership of Mark Meckler, to bring Parler back online and return to Apple’s App Store after we had been unfairly maligned by the media and its allies in Big Tech and Congress,” Farmer said in a statement, The Independent reported.
To return to the app store, the company said it had to create new community guidelines and has an algorithm to detect content that might incite violence. It was removed from Apple and Google after the tech companies said the app didn’t do enough to remove harmful content in the wake of the deadly capitol riot. Amazon also stopped allowing the app from using its cloud-computing services which caused the app to go offline. Other providers stepped in and restored the app’s website.
No plans have been made to return the app to Google Play store since Android users can get to the app in other ways.
