Kyle Rittenhouse, the man accused of fatally shooting protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin last August, is expected to make his first in-court appearance on Friday (May 21). Rittenhouse is accused of fatally shooting two people, Joseph Rosenbaum, and Anthony Huber, and injuring Gaige Grosskreutz, during a demonstration over the police shooting of Jacob Blake Jr.
Since then, he has been making court virtual appearances due to pandemic-related restrictions. With the restrictions lifted, Rittenhouse and his attorneys are due in court for a status conference, The Huffington Post reported.
The hearing is expected to work out details for the November trial scheduled for Rittenhouse who is facing multiple charges including homicide and reckless endangerment.
Rittenhouse, who was 17 at the time of the shootings, is accused of driving from his home in Antioch, Illinois with a gun. Kenosha was in the middle of several days of protests after Blake’s shooting. Rittenhouse and his lawyer claim he went to Kenosha to “protect businesses” during the demonstrations and has claimed he fired back in self-defense.
Authorities arrested a second man in connection with the shootings, after details surfaced about how Rittenhouse, who was underaged, was able to obtain a weapon.
Conservative groups have supported Rittenhouse and helped raise $2 million for his bail.
