Morehouse College Men's Basketball Head Coach Grady Brewer has reportedly passed away at 63 years old. In a statement, the historically Black college said that Brewer had been battling an illness in the weeks leading up to his passing. However, the school did not close what specific illness he had been battling.
"The past several decades can only justly be described as the Grady Brewer era at Morehouse," Morehouse College President David A. Thomas said about Brewer's passing.
"The only thing that surpassed his presence on the basketball court was his transformative influence on Morehouse Men as a fellow student, player, alumnus, coach, teacher, mentor, colleague, and friend. Not only will his spirit continue to live on in the hearts of the Morehouse family, but his legacy will impact the sport for years to come."
With a record of 315-241, Brewer is the second-winningest coach in Morehouse College men's basketball history. During his tenure at Morehouse College, he coached his team to four appearances in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Men's Basketball Tournament championship game. In 2003, he and the Maroon Tigers won the title game. More recently, Brewer's Maroon Tigers earned top regular-season rankings in both 2018 and 2019. As a coach, his career win total only trails Arthur McAfee, who Brewer played under.
"This is a very sad day for Morehouse athletics," Morehouse College Athletic Director Curtis Campbell added.
"I have known Grady for many years. He was a great coach and an even better human being. He cared deeply about the young men that played for him and made a lasting impact on their lives— both on and off the court. He will truly be missed and remembered by many."
Brewer is survived by his wife, Loletta, and his three sons, Xavier, Ryan and Jordan. Xavier and Jordan also played under Brewer.
