On Thursday (June 24), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the extension of its eviction moratorium through the end of July, citing public health concerns.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has presented a historic threat to the nation’s public health,” the agency wrote in a statement

“Keeping people in their homes and out of crowded or congregated settings –– like homeless shelters –– by preventing evictions is a key step in helping to stop the spread of COVID-19,” the statement continued. An estimated 7 million tenants are behind on rent, according to NPR.

The CDC first enacted an eviction moratorium back in September and extended it after President Joe Biden took office. Federal aid for renters who’ve been financially impacted by the pandemic continues to roll in despite legal challenges to the moratorium made in May.

The outcome of those challenges hasn’t been made clear yet since multiple federal courts have upheld protections for renters though, an emergency petition made to the Supreme Court over the moratorium is currently pending.

The CDC also said this is intended to be the last extension of the eviction moratorium.

Housing Resources
