LONDON, ENGLAND - JUNE 29: Serena Williams of The United States waves to the fans as she leaves the court after retiring from the match with an injury in her Ladies' Singles First Round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus during Day Two of The Championships - Wimbledon 2021 at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on June 29, 2021 in London, England.

Serena Williams ended her run at Wimbledon earlier than expected after experiencing a leg injury during a first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

The incident occurred as Williams held a 3-1 lead in the first set. As she moved across her end of the court, she slipped and called for an injury timeout. Attempting to continue the match, Williams returned to the court, but her movement was visibly limited.

During the fifth game, Williams was attempting to serve as she slipped near the baseline. After dropping the particular game, she grimaced in pain and opted to take another medical timeout. Still, Williams attempted to power forward, but she eventually dropped to her knees, prompting the chair umpire to check on her.

The match was stopped at three-all in the first set and her opponent, Sasnovich, was deemed the winner due to her opponent's injury. As Williams walked off the court, she delivered an emotional wave as she fought back tears.

"Of course I'm so sad for Serena, she's a great champion," Sasnovich said.

"It happens sometimes in tennis, but all the best for her and her recovery."

As news of Williams' departure made its way around the world, a number of fans joined in to offer their support for the tennis star.

Tragically, another Wimbledon participant suffered an injury on the same court that Williams did. Playing against Roger Federer, Adrian Mannarino slipped, fell and suffered an injury that forced him out of the tournament. The court has been a bit more slippery due to recent downpours of rain.

"I do feel it feels a tad more slippery maybe under the roof," Federer said.

"This is obviously terrible that it's back-to-back matches, and it hits Serena as well. Oh, my God, I can't believe it."
